After winning 27 games in 2010-11 and “carrying the mail” in the postseason it’s not surprising that Caps coach Bruce Boudreau would decide to start goaltender Michal Neuvirth in Saturday’s home opener against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Though meaningless in the grand scheme of an 82-game season, it also can be read as a nice gesture by Boudreau to Neuvirth who played great this preseason.

Looking back, Neuvirth has only played one of the Caps’ six games last season against the Hurricanes (posting his first NHL shutout). He’s also 23-6-3 with a 2.50 GAA and a .915 save percentage at Verizon Center.
